BOOK LAUNCH AND DISCUSSION “POSTCOLONIALISM AMERICAN LITERATURE: COMMODIFICATION OF HISTORY, IDENTITY POLITICS, AND CONTEMPORARY RACISM

On July 1st, 2020, the Faculty of Cultural Studies of the Halu Oleo Univesity held a book launch and discussion “Postcolonialism American Literature: Commodification of History, Identity Politics, and Contemporary Racism. The event was conducted online with use #Blacklivesmatter topics which held from 19:00 to 21:00 WIB. This book is written by Dr. Rasiah, S.Pd., M.Hum., English Literature Lecturer at Halu Oleo University and published by Universitas Gadjah Mada Press in January 2020.

This event presented four speakers, such as Prof. Dr. LaVerne Gyant from the Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University, USA; Irma Febriyanti, S.S., M.A., Doctoral candidate for American Studies in Gadjah Mada University, she is also the lecturer at PGRI Madiun University; Dr. Muhd Al Hafizh, Lecturer in English Language and Literature Department, Padang State University; and Dr. Rasiah, S.Pd., M.Hum., As the writer and Lecturer of English Literature at Halu Oleo University. The event was moderated by Ramis Rauf, S.S., M.A., as an English Literature Lecturer at Halu Oleo University.

The event was opened by the Chair of the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Halu Oleo University, Drs. Ansor Putra., M.Hum. According to him, as a place for the development in the English major, American, and world literature, the English Literature Study Program was very supportive about this book launching activity, moreover related to the moment of #Blacklivesmatter after George Floyd's death which still happening in the United States. This book examines at least how black people are depicted in contemporary American literature who indirectly portray racism in America today. This event felt lively because it presented interesting topics from various points of view. Prof. Gyant elevates the history of black slavery, Irma Febriyanti reviews the # Blacklivesmatter and its influence in contemporary American society, Dr. Rasiah reviewed receptions on slavery stories in the contemporary era, and Dr. Hafizh dissected this book which is associated with the #Blacklivesmatter and contemporary racism.    

This web seminar was conducted through Zoom application and live streaming via Youtube and joined by 800 participants. This event was closed by giving door prizes to participants who asked the best questions in the comments column. They each get a free copy of the book Postcolonialism American Literature: Commodification of History, Identity Politics, and Contemporary Racism, presented by Gadjah Mada Press University for free.
