This book is a monograph of research on the farm-household economuy of selected communities in Yogyakarta Province of Central Java. This research was conducted as part of the Core University Program supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The research was initiated in 1998 as 10-years project, and since then, many researchersfrom both Japan and Indonesia have participated in and contributed to the development of the project.

This book is divided into 2 parts. Part I discusses the socio-economic conditions and characteristics of the farm-household economy in the investigated area. Chapters 15 focus on the 2 hamlest located in the flat paddy area and describe in detail the analyses of factor markets with regard to land, labor, and capital. In addition, the structure of agricultural market an the characteristics of farm-household economy are also discussed. Chapter 6 discusses the characteristics of farmhousehold economy in the hill area.

Part II is a collection of research reports on more specific topics such as the integration of local markets of the region’s major agricultural products, practice of human capital on income and productivity, characteristics and effectiveness of shared tenancy, and effects of altruism and truts on quasi-credit. All the research papers reflect the data collected in this project.
